Breakneck Pond is located approximately 35 miles northeast of Hartford on the Connecticut-Massachusetts border. It is situated predominately in the town of Union in Tolland County, Connecticut, but the northern end of the pond extends partially into the town of Sturbridge, Massachusetts.BREAKNECK POND, Union-Massachusetts (92 acres) Walk-in access (approximately 1.2 miles from north end of Bigelow Pond). Note: Connecticut or Massachusetts license legal on entire pond. Species: (S YP CB CP LMB) Other: Use of motors, except electric, prohibited. Motor vehicle access prohibited. Access to the pond is through Bigelow Hollow State Park, and boats or canoes must be carried over trails to reach the water. The Park can be reached by taking Exit 73 from Interstate 84, to Route 190 north, and to Route 171 east. The access to Bigelow Hollow State Park is 1.3 miles from this intersection. There are no facilities available at the pond. Regulations allow only the use of electric-powered motors on the pond.The pond is natural in origin and receives water from several small unnamed brooks and from ground water entering through the pond bottom. The outflow from the pond is Breakneck Brook, which flows northward into the Quinebaug River system. At its normal surface elevation of 679 feet above sea level, the pond has a surface area of 88 acres, a maximum depth 14.5 feet, an average depth of 6.5 feet, and contains approximately 108 million gallons of water. Breakneck Pond has a watershed of 1.64 square miles (1,050 acres) that is predominately wooded and almost entirely located within the Nipmuck State Forest. The shoreline is undeveloped and completely forested.
