FISHING REPORT --- MAY 9th, 2009
STRIPED BASS-- The lower Connecticut River has been good this week. A good indicator has been reports of bass hitting on the incoming as well as the usual outgoing tides. Sizes are getting larger and this year the numbers of smaller fish were never great enough to say that the quantities are getting smaller. The bass are scattered and may need a bit of searching to locate them. Fortunately they are hitting surface offerings and you can work a fairly large area in short order. The rockpiles between the channel and Great Island are holding some bass, but for the most part the bass are on no particular structure. Slug-gos and stick type plugs such as Zara Spooks and Yozuri Hydro Pencils are getting some of the larger bass. This is the last week to safely use soft plastic baits before the toothfish come into the River.
There hasn't been any word of bass on the reefs and that again should change this week. Bunker have arrived in the Connecticut River and are pretty much along the entire Sound. Anglers fishing the tributaries are reporting consistent herring sightings, and those are the guys who are catching the larger bass.
Bait casters on the DEP Piers and Saybrook Point are catching mostly smaller bass on worms and a few larger ones on mackerel chunks.
BLUEFISH-- Not yet but Peconic Bay is loaded.
WINTER FLOUNDER-- Haven't heard any word this week.
REGULATIONS-- RI has finalized its fluke regs, we'll put together the tri-state rules and publish them in the next few days.
