Remember to check the 2009 Connecticut Angler’s Guide for tidal information (page 52) and pages 49-51 for saltwater trophy fish award information.
STRIPED BASS fishing is good during the evening and night. Buck tail jigs on three way rigs, the tube and worm combination, live lining bunker, scup, hickory shad and eels or using bottom rigs baited with fresh cut fish chunks work well. The usual striper spots include the Watch Hill reefs, the Race, Sluiceway, Pigeon Rip, Plum Gut, outer Bartlett Reef, Hatchett Reef, Long Sand Shoal, DEP Marine Headquarters fishing pier, Cornfield Point, Southwest Reef, Sixmile Reef, Falkner Island area, Bridgeport Harbor, Penfield Reef, Stratford Shoal/Middle Ground, and the reefs around the Norwalk Islands.
BLUEFISH remain abundant throughout LIS and tidal rivers and range in size from 1 to 2 lbs. (“rats” to “slammers”) weighing in the teens. Fishing is better during dawn or dusk. Bluefish spots include Watch Hill, Ram Island Reef in Fishers Island Sound, the Race, Pigeon Rip, Plum Gut, Hatchett Reef, lower Connecticut River (DEP Fishing Pier), Long Sand Shoal, Cornfield Point and along the beaches to Westbrook, Sixmile Reef, north rip off Falkner Island, New Haven Harbor, Charles Island area to Milford Point, Stratford Shoal/Middle Ground area, Penfield Reef, and Norwalk and Stamford Harbors.
SNAPPER BLUEFISH fishing is in high gear along the coastline!
SCUP fishing remains good to excellent on the local reefs and wrecks.
HICKORY SHAD fishing remains good in the lower Niantic River.
BLUE CRABS are also in the tidal rivers and creeks along the coastline and crabbing continues to improve! Try tidal creeks in the Stonington to Mystic area, Niantic River, tidal areas in Old Lyme to Old Saybrook, Westbrook/Clinton, and Guilford/Branford.
