DEP To Offer Cabins For Rent At Hammonasset
By CAROLYN MOREAU | The Hartford Courant

For those who enjoy the outdoors, but don't like sleeping in a tent, the state Department of Environmental Protection is offering a second option for summer camping.

Two new cabins are available for rent at Hammonasset State Park, in Madison, for $35 a night. The two-room cabins sleep six, have electricity, and come with mattresses, but no linens. They are accessible for people with disabilities.

"We think it's a bargain at any price, but that is a steal,'' said DEP Commissioner Gina McCarthy, who officially opened the cabins on Wednesday afternoon.

These are currently the only cabins in Connecticut available for rent by the DEP.

The cabins were built by Hammonasset Park staff from kits that cost about $20,000 each. They were funded through the DEP's "enterprise account," which is a special fund that allows the parks division to embark on revenue generating programs.

The cabins can be rented for a minimum of seven days and a maximum of 15 days. Bookings are available online at www.reserveamerica.com.
