July 22 Striper early report
Early word from last night's Striper trip is that the fishing was off to a red hot start with rods bent on good size Stripers up and down ther rail. As of 930 pm there were already a lot of good size bass brought to the gaff. Still plenty of openings on trips for the rest of the Striper Sailing week. Look for a full update later as more details become available.
July 22 all updates
Capt. Rich reported his anglers did a real number on the big sea bass today. It was an all out assault on the tasty relatives of the southern grouper. Many of the anglers on board had more than a half dozen good size sea bass apiece and many of the fish were in the 2 to 3.5 lb range with the biggest around 4 lbs. Sam Rondino from N. Brookfield Mass went home with 16 big sea bass including three double headers of jumbos!!! Nice job Sam! Two other longtime regular customers also put a hurt on the sea bass with Jeanne Merril from Danielson Ct taking 9 jumbo sea bass home while Barbara Gilmore from KIllingly went home with 8 big sea bass. These three anglers represent just a fraction of the angler hi lights from today. On the Fluke front things were slower due to lack of drift but a solid number of nice fish to 5 lbs were taken by anglers. Today featured the best haul of sea bass yet this year and with all the bait around we only look for things to get better!! Capt. Don also had quite the trip this afternoon on the 1 to 5pm half day. A modest group of angler had a nice bunch of big fluke to 9 lbs and a mess of good size sea bass to 4 lbs. Once again Bill Bourque from Saunderstown, RI had the big fluke of the day with a fine 9 lb slab. For those keeping track Bill is the angler who had the behemoth 14 lbr two weeks ago! Way to go Big Fish Bill! Anglers had upwards to a half dozen nice sea bass apiece. Capt. Don himself had 5 big sea bass and he only fished for an hour or so! Capt. Mike reported the 8am full day boat had decent action today but the keeping was not up to standards, nevertheless one angler had 4 big fluke to put in the box with three of them between 5 and 6 lbs. A bunch of good size sea bass to 3 lbs mixed in as well. Tomorrow looks like another nice weather day and all trips are on as scheduled.
July 21 PM 1/2
Capt. Don reported a good PM 1/2 trip for the handful of anglers who showed up to enjoy a dry flat calm evening on the water. Big news was the 6.25 lb jumbo 28 inch sea bass taken by Gina Collopy O'Connell. Nice fish Gina!! Some other good sea bass and plenty of action with the fluke made for a fun evening. The PM 4-8 trip runs daily.
July 21 Whales on Sunday
Capt. Don wanted to pass along the news that Sunday featured once again a brilliant show from over a dozen breeching Finback Whales including mothers and calves. Capt. Don feels this Whale year is off to the best start he has ever seen!! All we need is some better weather!! Next Whale Watch is scheduled for 1pm on Thursday. Capt. Don also reported a contination of bird life as various sea birds from near and afar have come to feast on the abundant sand eels which have drawn in the whales. Is anyone out there thinking about cod or tuna yet with these bait bird and whale reports ?? Whale Watching sails on a Tues, Thurs, Fri and weekend schedule at 1pm. July 21st 8-3/7-4updates
Capt. Mike reported yesterday's 8am full day fluke trip was excellent with an awesome mix of big fluke to 7 lbs and sea bass to 3 lbs. Mr. Pak went home with 5 big fluke yesterday and everyone on board had 2 to 4 good size fluke apiece to take home plus upwards to a half dozen or more good size sea bass apiece. Now that is some good fishing!! Capt. Mike also reported last night's PM 1/2 trip produced some excellent sea bass fishing with fish up to 4 lbs. Capt. Don reported that today's 8am trip was just okay due to some tough drift conditions. Things look much better for tomorrow's trip. Capt. Rich reported Sunday's 7am fluke/cbass trip was decent but Capt. Paul reported yesterday's trip on the slow side. A mix of nice fluke and sea bass but nothing huge and the action both days while still respectable was off from last week's. Capt. Rich looks forward to tomorrow's 7am full day trip on the Gail Frances while Capt. Mike looks forward to the 8am full day abaord the Admiral Frances.
Striped Bass/Bluefish July 18th
Capt. Don reported the Striped Bass fishing was once again phenomenal and a good number of limits and steady action through the night. A lot of good size bass boated with the largest just shy of 30 lbs. Next Striper trip will set sail Wednesday Night at 7pm aboard the Lady Frances. There has been plenty of room at the rail on these Bass trips as of late so feel free to call the office and book if interested in booking or for further details.
Capt. Keith reported a poor night of Blue fishing. No more words necessary unlike the better fishing of the night before.
July 18th 2009 In Memoriam
All members of the Frances Fleet fishing team would like to extend the most sincere condolences and sympathies to the family and loved ones of one of our most cherished and longtime regular customers Ronald Dugan who passed away yesterday. Ron will be missed greatly by all.
July 18th 7 am to 4pm
Capt. Rich reported another grand slam day of jumbo fluke and sea bass fishing today with many limit catches on big fluke and many anglers getting 4 to 6 or more nice size sea bass apiece to go along with their big fluke. Largest fish today was a fluke in the 7 lb range but 4 to 5 lb fish were commonplace. It was a great day and all aboard left with plenty of fresh fillets for many fine meals to come. First mate Chris said that all terminal gear was working well the past couple days with bait rigs catching as well as anything else. Capt. Rich looks forward to tomorrow's fluke/cbass combo sailing at 7 am aboard the Gail Frances.
July 18th 1/2 AM and PM
Both Capt. Don and Capt. Mike reported excellent half day fishing trips today. Briana from the Knights of Columbus group caught fluke of 5 and 6 lbs while Logan and William Stadley teamed up to catch 25 fluke and all of these anglers were first time fluke fishermen!! We would like to thank the Knights of Columbus for sharing their morning with us. Capt. Don commented the rental rod set ups with just squid/spearing combos have been producing as well as anything else. Capt. Mike reported lots of action on the PM half day trip. One angler had three nice jumbo fluke to take home. He was using just squid strip/spearing combo on bare hooks. Some nice size scup and a few keeper sea bass mixed in on both outings.
July 18th 8 am to 3pm
Capt. Mike reported an excellent day of fluke fishing today aboard the Admiral Frances. The catching was as good as it gets in the morning but the keeping not as great so a move to some deeper waters produced a steady pick of good size jumbo fluke up to 8 lbs for the anglers aboard today and therefore greatly excelled the keeping!! Some anglers left with several jumbo fluke apiece. A few hefty sea bass and a nice bunch of good size scup mixed in as well. Capt. Mike looks forward to tomorrow morning's full day trip leaving at 8am aboard the Admiral Frances.
