BARKHAMSTED — Anglers, get your fishing gear ready.

The annual start of fishing season in the Farmington River will take place on Saturday, April 17.

Fishermen gather by the banks of the Farmington River in Riverton to stake claim to the perfect spot. Many anglers will start their day at 4 a.m. with a stop at the Riverton Fire Department for breakfast and a hot cup of coffee.

At 6 a.m., the siren sounds to mark the beginning of the fishing tournament, a tradition in its 50th year. Fishermen of all ages try and catch one of the many fish stocked by the Farmington River Anglers Association, the Northwest Connecticut Sportsman’s Council, the Riverton Merchants Association, the Connecticut Department of Environmental Protection and many other contributors.

With the hope that they have caught “the big one,” fishermen gather at the Riverton Firehouse at 10 a.m. to see if they are this year’s winner of the coveted grand prize, a Hitchcock chair donated by Still River Antiques.

Many other fishermen are rewarded for their efforts with prizes donated by local and worldwide retailers, including handcrafted nets from McAllister’s Fly Shop, and prizes from the Riverton Merchants and Cabela’s. For more information, people are asked to call the Riverton General Store at (860) 379-0811.
