Funding approved for replacing fishing pier at Cummings Park

STAMFORD -- Funding for replacing the fishing pier at Stamford's Cummings Park has been approved, state officials said this week.
A $750,000 bond authorization for the purpose of replacing the pier received unanimous legislative approval, according to state Reps. Carlo Leone (D-Stamford) and Gerald Fox, III (D-Stamford).
Prior to being destroyed by tropical storm Ernesto in September 2006, the pier was a popular entertainment and recreation destination for people throughout lower Fairfield County, according to the Stamford representatives.
Fox and Leone believe a new pier would attract sightseers and fishing enthusiasts.
"The pier was a significant asset to Stamford and we all felt the loss when it was destroyed," said Leone, co-chairman of the finance committee's bonding subcommittee, in a statement released Tuesday. "The day we see the new pier will be a joyous moment for all of Stamford and others who visit our wonderful beach. I am happy to be part of the process that will restore the pier for the benefit of our community that we all love."
Fox said "a rebuilt pier would not only be great for Stamford, but the benefits will extend throughout the region."
"Cummings Park is a beloved destination with a great history and a new pier will enhance its enjoyment by all," Fox, a member of the legislature's Planning & Development Committee, said in a statement Tuesday.
The bonding was authorized by the legislature under the Urban Act program. In order for the funding to be released, the state Bond Commission, which is led by Gov. M. Jodi Rell, must give final approval to the request.
Stamford's Cumming Park spans about 80 acres along Long Island Sound and has numerous recreational ball fields and courts, as well as a public boat launch and marina. It is named after former Stamford Mayor Homer Cummings, who served as U.S. Attorney General under President Franklin Roosevelt in the 1930s.
