New England lobstermen will discuss the fate of their livelihood this week.
The state Department of Environmental Protection Marine Fisheries Division plans to hold two informational meetings to update them on what’s going on.
At issue is a recommendation made in an April report by the Atlantic States Marine Fisheries Commission, a multistate panel that sets fishing regulations for the region, which called the southern New England lobster population "critically depleted" and said "continued fishing pressure reduces the stock's potential to rebuild."
It proposed closing the lobster fishery from Cape Cod and south, including Long Island Sound, for five years.
The first meeting will be held Monday July 12, at 7 p.m. at the DEP Marine Headquarters Education Center in Old Lyme, 333 Ferry Road.
The second meeting will be held on Thursday July 15, at 7 p.m at The Sound School in New Haven 60 South Water St.
If you’d like more information you can e-mail the DEP Marine Fisheries Division or call them at 860-434-6043.
