Recently, some of the best tournament bass fishermen from the Northeast took part in a tournament to benefit a fellow angler. The Mike Greenhill Team Tournament was held on Candlewood Lake this past Sunday.
The tournament drew 39 teams, whose sole purpose was to raise money for Mike Greenhill and his family. Greenhill, who fished tournaments with many of these anglers in the past is battling stomach cancer. Greenhill's father has also been diagnosed with the same kind of cancer.
Sylvia Morris of the Connecticut Bass Federation, decided that "something had to be done" to help Greenhill and his family. Morris discussed the idea of having a fund-raising tournament with several members of the Connecticut Bass Federation. Those who heard of the fund-raising tournament thought it was a great idea.
Morris solicited the members Connecticut Bass Federation for their support in running the tournament. Members volunteered their time and efforts to help run the tournament. The federation's tournament trailer was used to transport the tents and the scales that were used for the weigh-in and awards presentation.
Donations were made from individuals who were not able to fish the tournament but wanted to support Greenhill and his family. Clubs from within the federation challenged each other to donate money to the cause.
The members of the Connecticut Bass Junior Federation held barbecues at three federation tournaments this year and raised $750 for Greenhill.
Donations were made by sponsors and members of the Connecticut Bass Federation that were used to hold a raffle, with the proceeds going to Greenhill. Rods, reels, lures and battery chargers were donated as raffle prizes.
The Connecticut Bass Federation would like to thank Lunker City Specialties, Kistler Rods, Guest Chargers, U.S. Reels, K&G Rods, Chris Bielert, Joe Kowalski, Scott Janus and the members of the federation who donated their time and services. A special thank you goes out to Danbury Town Park and the Connecticut DEP, which helped in scheduling the tournament.
First place in the Greenhill Tournament went to the team of Al Gambardella and Daryl Biron with 29.12 pounds. Second place was taken by the husband and wife team of Kevin and Rachel Rose with 26.79 pounds. The team of Abe Kalechman and Chris Parker took third place with 26.35 pounds. Rounding out the field in fourth place was the team of William Pease and Chuck Caye with 24.28 pounds.
