Saturday is Hunting & Fishing Day in Connecticut
DEP Plans Day of Events at Sessions Woods to Celebrate Contributions of Hunters, Anglers
Governor M. Jodi Rell today announced that she has declared Saturday to be National Hunting and Fishing Day in Connecticut and said the state Department of Environmental Protection has scheduled a variety of activities to celebrate the contributions of hunters and anglers to the conservation of the state’s natural resources.
"Sportsmen have been at the forefront of the conservation movement for over 100 years," Governor Rell said. "They show their support for conservation through the respectful and thoughtful way they enjoy our state’s natural beauty and through the financial support they provide – through taxes and special fees on hunting and fishing equipment – to help pay for wildlife and fish management, habitat restoration and other conservation programs.
"As small a state as Connecticut may be, we are blessed to have so much of it preserved as open space, farmland, park and forest property and other natural preserve," the Governor said. "Indeed, it is one of the greatest assets our state possesses, and a treasure we must safeguard for generations to come."
The DEP, in conjunction with Friends of Sessions Woods, will hold a celebration of National Hunting and Fishing Day on Saturday at the Sessions Woods Wildlife Management Area and Education Center in Burlington. This free, day-long event will feature many outdoor-related activities and demonstrations.
Activities for all ages are planned, along with interesting programs and workshops about hunting and fishing, hunting dog demonstrations, target shooting, 3-D archery and casting pools. The Congress of Rough Riders of Naugatuck will provide scheduled demonstrations of Cowboy Action Shooting. Attendees also will have the opportunity to speak firsthand with DEP biologists about wildlife and fisheries topics, as well as with representatives from a variety of conservation, hunting, and fishing organizations.
Children can participate in several fun activities and crafts such as track making, face painting, a blindfolded ropes course and a scavenger hunt. Door prizes donated by outdoor equipment companies consisting of hunting, fishing, and outdoor equipment will be awarded throughout the day.
"Connecticut’s anglers and hunters make a tremendous contribution to ongoing wildlife and habitat research, conservation and protection activities in the state," said DEP Deputy Commissioner Susan Frechette. "Hunting and Fishing Appreciation Day provides an opportunity to not only showcase those efforts but give all of the state’s residents an opportunity to experience the great outdoors."
"The facilities at Sessions Woods exist today because of financial support from sportsmen through the Federal Aid in Wildlife Restoration Program," said Paul Willis, Friends of Sessions Woods President. "The Friends of Sessions Woods wants to show its appreciation by sponsoring a special day to celebrate hunting and fishing.
In addition to the Friends of Sessions Woods, financial support for the event is being provided by the Main Street Community Foundation and the Clinton S. Roberts Foundation.
Activities will run from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. Handicapped and limited public parking will be available on site at Sessions Woods. Overflow shuttle parking will be available at Lewis S. Mills High School, 26 Lyons Road, off Route 4 in Burlington. The Friends of Sessions Woods will be selling food and drinks during the event.
