Western Connecticut's best places to fish as opening day nears

"Opening day in Connecticut has become synonymous with good family fun," said Bill Hyatt, director of the state DEP's Inland Fisheries Division.
"With the new programs that have been put in place the last few years (trout parks, trophy trout areas, special trout management areas and stocking of channel catfish in seven waterways), first-time and novice anglers should experience the thrill of catching fish. We are making it easier for everyone to catch fish, including trophy-size ones, which we hope will inspire kids and grown-ups to become lifelong anglers and stewards of the environment."
Opening day of inland fishing is Saturday. The season starts at 6 a.m. It's the day of the year when the most trout and the most large breeders are available all year. The Fisheries Division has stocked at least 400,000 trout.
Spring is the best trout fishing season because that's when the most trout are stocked and the fishing conditions are good. And most lakes and rivers are open for most species, including black bass, shad, Atlantic salmon, kokanee, pike, pickerel, American shad, hickory shad, walleye and panfish.
