They tend to base this on southern bass fishing, where bass growth occurs all year long. 5 -6 lb bass are the norm down south. Up here, that's a nice fish.No need to bother with the heavy mono and flouro they recommend up in our areas. Braid is another issue. 40 to 65 lbs is based on ripping through weeds, so that is normal anywhere. I use 40 on my bait caster used strictly for throwing into heavy cover.
I will go to 17 mono and flouro when I hit the CT river for striper in the spring. Just don't like casting heavy lines on bait caster other than braid.

i found myself reconsidering this very fact due to loosing two rapala's this weekend. I thought 20lb braid was the same as any other line and i broke it main line not at the knot or on the 20lb seaguar floro leader. Twenty pound test is the highest i have ever used, 10 being the normal high. I have the inclination to think that 10lb floro is stronger than the braid, but there is no fact behind that. I run 6 lb on my bass rod, and this was my heavy setup, for pike. Weeds are ruthless. The seven pound pike in my pic was taken on 10lb seaguar invesx.
