Marine District
Criminal Arrest
On February 20, 2012 Officer Chemacki was on patrol at Hammonasset Beach State Park in Madison and observed two females in a parked vehicle apparently smoking something between them. Upon approach, he smelled burnt marijuana and asked the two eighteen year olds about their activity. One produced a small amount of marijuana and a smoking pipe, which were taken into evidence. Following a computer check of both subjects, it was determined they had active protective orders against each other from a prior arrest by Clinton police, who confirmed the orders. Both subjects were taken into custody, transported to State Police Troop F, Westbrook, and were scheduled to appear in court the next day on violation of protective order charges, and miscellaneous drug / paraphernalia violation.
Commercial Fishing Violation
On February 29, 2012 Sgt. Kane with Officers Persico and Logiodice were checking a commercial trawler in the town of New London. The commercial trawler was a federally permitted vessel participating in the small mesh Northeast Multispecies fishery targeting Silver Hake (whiting). During the offloading process it was determined that the vessel had exceeded its federal trip limit of 30,000 lbs of Whiting by 1,440 lbs. The weights of the fish were documented on a NOAA Joint Enforcement Agreement form and the case was referred to the National Marine Fisheries Service Special Agent at the New Bedford Office.
Eastern District
Bank Robbery
On February 27, 2012 Officers from the Eastern District headquarters in Marlborough assisted the State Police in the apprehension of an armed bank robber. A white male armed with a knife robbed a bank in Hebron and attempted to allude police by driving his BMW at a high rate of speed away from the banks location. The pursuing troopers were assisted by ENCON officers as he traveled on Route 66 in Marlborough. The suspect was stopped after he drove over stop sticks deployed by the State Police while attempting to drive on to Route 2 in the wrong direction. Officers assisted in retrieving money that the suspect had thrown from his vehicle during the pursuit along Route 66 and were involved in taking the suspect into custody due to their quick actions and timely response.
Trapping
On Saturday, February 18th, 2012 Officer Stanko was on patrol in the Northeast Corner of Connecticut when he received information of potentially illegal trapping activity. Upon arrival to the area in Thompson, he searched and found several illegal trap sets. A suspect was immediately developed and upon interview by Officer Stanko, an admission by the suspect was obtained. Officer Stanko arrested the subject and issued him a summons to appear in court at a later date.
Western District
Caiman Seizure
On February 6, 2012 EnCon Police Sergeant Cindy Schneider responded to the Milford Animal Control facility after an anonymous person dropped off a two and a half foot long dwarf Caiman. Sergeant Schneider transported the Caiman to the Beardsley Zoo in Bridgeport which held the reptile until it was picked up by Rainforest Reptiles of Massachusetts.
