Headed across the sound yesterday in style aboard fellow Captains 32 foot Whaler Outrage. The twin 275's allowed us to cruise in comfort through the 3 foot wind pushed swells.
As we neared the point we could make out tousands of birds hovering and diving. The sight was incredible. We found 3 massive pods of blitzing fish that were all close to an acre in size.
Stripers and bluefish pushed balls of bay anchovies to the surface then obliterated them.
Using Pugalsi style anchovie patterns, we took numbers of stripers between 25 and 37 inches. The bluefish were all slammers 12 to 15 pounds. Using a 40-pound florocarbon tippett we still lost a number of flies. We did not hook any albies, but heard of a few catches on the radio. When the tide turned the blitzing stopped for about a half hour. Then, as if someone turned on a switch, it started up again intense as ever. There were pods of fish on the norht side of the point and all around to the south side and at least a mile down alond the south side.
I have been fish Montaulk for over 25 years and this is one of the best fall days i've had.
On the way back to Niantic ct. we encountered more blitzing fish off Gardiners Island. we were too tired to cast so we waved as we cruised by.
A terrific day on the water.
