Islamorada FL Fishing Report

The Hump

If you get a chance to fish the Keys and to get offshore, a prime destination are the numerous humps. Islamorada Hump is famouse, but as I said, there are several where the depths rise from 400-600' up to 200-300. We went out on a windy as hell day, passing up on the so-so/hit or miss sailfishing to catch some reef donkeys (aka amberjack) on the humps. In february, females are preparing to spawn and it is not unusual to catch them 50-70lbs. Think of hauling a 50lb striper from 300' down (which would be more striper than I've landed). Better yet, when you catch a little one, you send them back down for a big bull or tiger shark. Anyway, we caught some amberjacks until we got tired of being bounced, and then moved closer to shore to chase some king mackerels, cuda's or whatever else we could find.
