My favorite is a rubber worm.
But even better is drifting with live bait , Minnows or crawlers.
Hook the minnow in the top lip only so it can breath as your drifting .
Hook the crawler once in the head , let the rest of it trail behind .
The bigger the bait , the bigger the bass.
(As long as it's legal ) Use native minnows from the lake your fishing in .You can scoop net them or set up a minnow trap.
They usually hang around the boat launch or the beach .
I found the fish are more comfortable with taking natives .
They are however smaller , so I use a yumbrella rig ( you can string up to 5 minnows on this rig ) Makes smaller bait more enticing .
I also use 4" to 6" yellow perch ( If they are available in the lake )
or small bluegills . I also use a "Strike-Guard"
( Amazon.com under $9.00)
I've been using these for years , a must have for drift fishing .
These allow you to keep your bail open ( so when the fish hits you don't lose your pole ) while holding your line just tight enough to keep the bait trolling behind you . Plus the tension on it is adjustable .
You should hook 5 to 8 pounders with the yellow perch and bluegills .
They might not take a lure sometimes , But they can't resist live bait .
Been fishing like this for years , with great results .
Hang on tight and have fun . Good luck ,
Eric
