ICE FISHING REPORT NUMBER 4
2/4/2010
SAFETY REMINDER: DEP reminds winter anglers that SAFETY COMES FIRST! Be aware that ice thickness varies on all water bodies due to a number of environmental factors including in-lake water circulatory patterns, snow cover and the type and amounts of recent precipitation. Please check the ice carefully before venturing out and check repeatedly to make sure that ice thickness is sufficient. Always let someone know where you are going and when you’ll return.
Anglers are reminded that the 1-3 inches of rain that fell in late January did impact ice cover in some areas, with open water appearing around the edges of some water bodies. Although winter has returned after that brief hiatus, anglers should still be extra cautious.

TIPS & TRICKS FOR WINTER BLACK CRAPPIE
Crappie are easy to catch and provide a nice sporting fight. Finding them is another story. Crappie tend to school together and wander all over the lakes they inhabit.
•
Popular baits are shiners, hooked through the mouth and jigs tipped with grubs.
•
When buying shiners, ask for the smaller baits.
•
Keep your baits moving to trigger bites.
•
Always keep your bait just above the school in the water column.
•
Crappie move for cover around dusk and low light conditions.
•
Crappie school and usually suspend in mid depths during daylight.
•
Spray your baits liberally with scented Crappie Attractant.
•
Tackle needed to ice fish crappies include:
-
small split shot
-
small shiner or fathead minnow
-
