Norwich, Conn. —

Fishing may be a multibilliondollar industry, but 15-year-old Jamie Rivard, of Jewett City, doesn’t need any expensive gear to land a trophy trout — just a cinnamon-raisin bagel.

“Fishing genius,” Jamie and her friend, 10-year-old Sara Carney, of Griswold, decided Saturday morning while at Norwich’s Spaulding Pond.

“I figured they probably like bread, so we just threw it out, and smaller ones, like minnows, started nibbling at it. Then bigger ones came out and grabbed the whole thing,” Sara said.

Since mid-February, the state Department of Energy and Environmental Protection has released 376,000 trout into 300 Connecticut waterways, and the agency expects to have stocked more than 600,000 fishable trout in time for opening day, which began at 6 a.m. Saturday.
