Protecting the Salmon river
by News Channel 8's Jodi Latina
East Hampton (WTNH) _ Several towns are working together to protect a river resource in Connecticut.
The Salmon River runs through 10 towns and is said to be the healthiest body of water in Connecticut. Students from Branford High School are doing their part to help save the river, putting about 100 salmon back into the river.
"We had to raise them, keep them a certain temperature in a cooler," said Suzanne Barringer from Branford HS.
"So you are like a proud parent today?"
"Yeah, we are really attached to our fish," Suzanne responded.
The salmon will eventually spawn upstream in the watershed. That watershed is the main reason all the towns are signing a conservation compact. From Colchester to Glastonbury, a promise to keep the river safe, clean and viable for future generations.
"I think it's a great thing we're doing...and hope we continue doing it," Suzanne said.
The river begins on the East Hampton and Colchester Line near Route 16 and dumps into the Connecticut River in East Haddam.
