State funds to repair Bashan Lake Dam

HARTFORD - The State Bond Commission has approved funds for the Bashan Lake Dam as part of $1.47 million in state funding slated for dam repair, officials said Friday.

Connecticut will also be able to leverage an additional $900,000 in federal funds to help cover the costs of the repairs at Bashan Lake and dams across the state, according to state Rep. Linda Orange, D-Colchester, and state Sen. Eileen Daily, D-Westbrook.

“Bashan Lake in East Haddam is a treasure," Orange said. "This combination of state and federal funds will shore up the dam and make sure it is safe.”

This statewide emergency dam repair project is expected to create approximately 57 construction-related jobs.

“The Bashan Lake Dam transforms the Moodus River into one of Connecticut’s premier destinations for recreation, ranging from canoeing and kayaking to fishing for no less than eight different species of fish,” Daily said. “Planned improvements to the dam will receive a proportionate share of a $1.47 million grant that helps the state qualify for an additional $900,000 in federal funding. The end result will be ongoing recreational use of the lake, enhanced peace of mind for everybody downstream, and, at last, some protection for the homes, basements, and other structures of lakefront property owners.”

This ones not huge, but there must be some "dam money" comin' from somewhere!

Norwich, Conn. — State Rep. Kevin Ryan, D-Montville, said Friday that work on the Savin Lake Dam in Lebanon would move forward.

The State Bond Commission approved funding for the project Friday.

As part of a total $3.4 million statewide dam upgrade, this funding will be used to finance repairs to state owned dams that were breached, damaged, or determined to be high or significant hazards.

Savin Lake Dam repairs will begin with a design phase, followed by anticipated repairs including flattening downstream slopes and adding spillway capacity.

“I am pleased the state considers Savin Lake Dam a priority,” said Ryan. “This properly maintained resource protects local residents and property from potential damage.”
